Club History

Gary Pauna has long had a passion for R/C racing! Although it has been around the Twin Ports and surrounding area since at least the 1970’s, it was never sustainable until Gary took the lead. Races like the Fitgers 500 in Duluth and the Fall Fest in Superior have come and gone. Frustrated with the travel involved in racing out of town, Gary acted on his belief that the Twin Ports could provide enough dedicated racers to start a club and sustain a top rate R/C racing venue. The following is a brief timeline of events leading up to the birth of the Lake Superior R/C Club (LSRCC).

Most club members that were around in the beginning remember racing in the early 1990’s at a small hobby shop in Duluth, MN called Wild West Hobby. The racing was great; but the tracks were very small. Racing moved to Howard Ports in Cloquet, MN for a couple of summers after the shop closed. When racing in Cloquet came to an end Gary had to travel as much as 120 miles to Brainard MN, so he decided to start LSRCC. He found a couple of local venues for carpet racing and then obtained the racers indexes from Wild West Hobby and Howards Ports. He sent out cards to racers asking them to meet at his home if they were interested in starting a R/C Club and YES THEY WERE!!

LSRCC was founded in 2002 and racing started at a local roller rink on old carpet donated from a power company. New carpet was purchased after a few years and racing moved to a larger venue at the National Guard Armory in Superior, WI.

Off road racing took place at the Spirit Mountain Ski Resort for a time before moving to the South St. Louis County Fairgrounds where LSRCC has the largest off-road R/C track in Minnesota!

LSRCC currently hosts Thursday night On-Road Carpet and Off-Road Dirt club races as well as special weekend events (e.g. Minnesota State On-Road Championship and Minnesota State Off-Road Championship races). The Minnesota State On-road Championship race is held at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center in Duluth, MN in conjunction with the Motorhead Madness car show.

Gary's entrepreneurial spirit as an avid R/C racer, along with the dedication of our club members, has led to the creation of a year-round R/C racing venue that is second to none.
